Zanzibar entry requirements : Zanzibar is part of Tanzania and it is an archipelago found off the east African coast on the Indian ocean. To Visit Zanzibar, some of the entry requirements include a passport which is valid for 6 months from date of arrival. It is recommended that tourists before going for their tours to Zanzibar confirm that the passport meets the requirements for the travel to the island.

Visas are also among the requirements for travel to Zanzibar. These visas can be applied for online and the visa is valid for up to about 90 days. There are some countries whose nationals are allowed to travel to Zanzibar island without the visa.

Zanzibar entry requirements


A visa for Tanzania around different parts of the country and can be used to travel to Zanzibar. Traveling to Zanzibar with an evisa makes the process of going through immigration easier and it takes a short time to obtain the visa.

Within a period of 10 days the visa process of Zanzibar can be complete. After applying for the visa and making payment for the visa, you will wait for approval of the visa and this approval can be sent by email.

The visas to Tanzania include ordinary visas or single entry visas, business visa, multiple entry visa, transit visas, Gratis visas and also student visas. Getting a visa on arrival in Zanzibar costs 50 USD. The requirements for visas are as follows;

When applying for an ordinary visa to travel to Tanzania, the requirements for the visa include copy of a valid passport, a return ticket for the flight, a filled declaration form and the cost of the ordinary visa is 50 USD.

A multiple entry visa is another type of visa which can be used when travelling to Tanzania or Zanzibar. This type of the visa costs 100 USD and the requirements for the multiple entry visa include a copy of a valid passport of the applicant, a cover letter for the host institution with detailed reasons of the visit and frequency of the visits, a certificate of marriage or a spouse, a passport or ID of the spouse and also a return ticket of the flight.

A business visa is also another type of visa which can be used when travelling to Tanzania and also Zanzibar. The business visa costs 250 USD and requirements for this visa include a copy of the applicant’s valid passport, a work contract or proof of work or assignment within a period of time not exceeding three months and you will also need a return ticket of the flight.

Another visa which is needed for travel to Tanzania is the transit visa which costs 30 USD. Requirements for the transit visa include a copy of the applicant’s valid passport and an onward ticket to the intended country of destination.

Zanzibar entry requirements


Student visas are also available for travel to Tanzania and the price of this visa ranges from 50 USD, 250 USD to 550 USD and the price of the visa depends on the category and duration of the stay. When applying for a student visa for Tanzania, you will also need a cover letter from the institution or college where you will be studying and also a letter with details of the course or field of study, and the duration of the program to be attended. Students who will be studying in Tanzania for a period of not exceeding 3 months are charged 50 USD, those who will be studying for a period more than 3 months are charged 250 USD and students who wish to pursue research in Tanzania for a period of about 2 years are charged 550 USD as visa fees.

The different points of entry in Tanzania include Julius Nyerere international airport, Kilimanjaro international airport, Abeid Amani Karume international airport, Namanga border and also Tunduma border.

When visiting Zanzibar, there are 2 ways to get to the island including flight and also sea or using a ferry.

Abeid Amani Karume international airport is the main airport on Zanzibar island and international flights direct to the island can be got from countries like Belgium, Italy, Oman, South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, Poland, Turkey, Germany, Malawi, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Israel, Netherlands and Russia. There are also domestic flights from different parts of Tanzania to Zanzibar.

Getting to Zanzibar island by ferry can be done from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar and these ferry operates daily. The ferry takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to get from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar Island.
